Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis

Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis, and the talented star of “Derry Girls,” Louisa Harland, have enthusiastically joined the cast of “Ulster American,” an exciting new stage production by renowned Irish playwright David Ireland, known for his work on “Cyprus Avenue.” The production will be expertly directed by Jeremy Herrin, whose credits include “A Mirror” and “Best of Enemies.”

“Ulster American” is set to take the stage at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, with previews beginning on December 4 and the grand opening night scheduled for December 13.

This witty and incisive social satire revolves around three central characters: an Oscar-winning American actor, a discerning English director, and a Northern Irish playwright. As they embark on rehearsals for a transformative new play, their disparate perspectives threaten to send the evening spiraling into chaos. The synopsis hints at a thought-provoking exploration of power dynamics, cultural identity, and the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry. With its pitch-black humor, the play fearlessly delves into these complex themes.

Woody Harrelson returns to the London stage after nearly two decades to portray the Oscar-winning American actor, Jay Conway. Andy Serkis takes on the role of the English director, Leigh Carver, while Louisa Harland brings her remarkable talent to the character of the Northern Irish playwright, Ruth Davenport.

The production boasts a stellar creative team, including Max Jones for set and costume design, Oliver Fenwick for lighting design, and Emma Laxton for sound design. Casting duties are in the capable hands of Jessica Ronane CDG, with Nicky Allpress serving as Associate Director.

Jeremy Herrin, the director, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “I’m delighted that this rollercoaster of a play has summoned such a stellar roster of talent to join us for this pitch-black comedy at the beautifully refurbished Riverside Studios.” He praised David Ireland’s fearlessness in tackling pretension and shared his honor in bringing the legendary Woody Harrelson to the London stage, welcoming Andy Serkis back to live theater after his cinematic success, and celebrating Louisa Harland’s remarkable performance alongside them.

“Ulster American” initially premiered in 2018 at the Traverse Theatre and earned critical acclaim, including the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award and the Scotsman Fringe First Award. With such a remarkable ensemble and creative team, the London production promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience.
